Cuyahoga County probation officer charged with drug trafficking

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cuyahoga County probation officer is accused of dealing drugs from her home.

Lisa Heathfield, 48, is charged with aggravated drug trafficking. She entered no plea Thursday at her first court appearance and she subsequently posted 10 percent of a $15,000 bond.

A man, Luis Espada, also 48, is also charged with aggravated drug trafficking and possessing weapons with a felony record. Espada’s bond was also set at $15,000. He remains in the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Both were arrested Wednesday after Cleveland police’s Second District vice unit raided their home in the city’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood, police said.

They’re both accused of selling cocaine, court records say. Detectives wrote in court records they found the drug packaged for sale and two handguns in the home.

Heathfield’s defense attorney, Gary Levine, declined to comment on the case. But he said Heathfield is a disabled Navy veteran with no prior criminal history.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court spokesman Darren Toms said the court is aware of Heathfield’s arrest, but declined to comment further.

Espada was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in 1991. He was one of five people charged in connection with the August 1990 shooting death of Luis Molina in Cleveland, but was the only one that was convicted of the crime.

Molina, 28, was sitting in a car with another man on Aug. 11, 1990. Espada walked up to the car, the men spoke and he fired several shots into the car, killing Molina and wounding his 30-year-old passenger, according to Plain Dealer archives and court records.

Police at the time called it a drug-related shooting.

Espada also has a prior convictions for felonious assault, aggravated assault and drug trafficking in the early 1990s.

His most recent conviction happened in 2013, when he pleaded guilty to drug possession.
