Maine bill gives job training for welfare

May 12, 2013

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine House and Senate votes are expected soon on a bill to ensure that welfare recipients get the tools and training they need to enter the workforce and secure long-term employment.

The so-called “ticket to work” bill also directs the Department of Health and Human Services to identify education and other programs recipients need for job placement.

The Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee’s unanimous approval of the bill last week sets it up for likely passage. It’s sponsored by House Speaker Eves of North Berwick.

Eves says the bill will help strengthen Maine’s anti-poverty programs to ensure people on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families can have a permanent pathway out of poverty.
