National Guard cancels air show over deployments

November 29, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island National Guard has canceled its annual air show, one of the most popular events in the state in the summer.

The Guard says it expects more than 500 troops will be deployed in 2019 during the traditional timeframe of the Open House Air Show in Quonset.

Maj. Gen. Christopher Callahan in a statement said they could neither compromise the training of those being deployed, nor the planning of the air show.

This is the first time since the show began in 1991 that it has been canceled due to deployments. The 2013 show was canceled due to federal budget cuts.

An estimated 85,000 people attended this year’s event.

The Guard says it plans to hold bring the show back in 2020.
