BHS hoops teams open with wins

COLUMBUS -- New coaches for both the Beatrice boys and girls basketball teams picked up wins in their season openers at Columbus Friday night.

The Orangemen, who are now coached by former Heartland coach Clark Ribble, defeated the Discoverers 51-39 while the Lady O, who are now coached by Jalen Weeks, won their game 38-24.

The Beatrice boys fell behind 12-7 in the first quarter, but bounced back in the second quarter to take 22-20 lead at half time.

They held onto a narrow 32-31 lead after three quarters before outscoring Columbus 19-8 in the final quarter to win 51-39.

Bennett Crandall led the way for Beatrice with 14 points while freshman Elliot Jurgens had 13, Andrew Mahoney and Jace Pethoud had eight each, Payton Murphy had five and Griffen Vater had three.

The Beatrice girls team jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it. They led 10-2 after the first quarter and 18-11 at half time.

The Lady O extended that lead to 28-17 after three quarters and then coasted to the 38-24 win.

Carley Leners led the way for Beatrice with 18 points while Mak Hatcliff had 11 points, Addie Barnard had seven points and Alexis Schwartz had two points.

Both unbeaten Beatrice teams will have their home opener Thursday night when they host Crete at the Ozone.
