Bechtel Tosses Marist’s First No-Hitter

March 24, 2003

NEW YORK (AP) _ Marist right-hander Chuck Bechtel threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in school history Sunday, leading the Red Foxes to a 14-0 victory over Manhattan College.

Bechtel, a fifth-year senior, struck out five, walked three and faced 29 batters _ two over the minimum _ in improving to 3-0. He didn’t allow a baserunner to reach second base.

He got some defensive help from second baseman Tim Allen. In the fifth inning, Allen fielded a grounder deep behind second and threw out Gary Diaz by a step. In the ninth, Phil Kuhner drew a one-out pinch-hit walk. One out later, John Maser hit a sharply hit ball that Allen fielded and flipped to shortstop Eric Johnson for the force at second to end it.

Matt Griffiths went 3-for-5 with five RBIs to pace a 19-hit attack for Marist (7-6).

Manhattan (6-9) won the second game of the doubleheader 8-5.
