Japanese stayer Admire Rakti wins Caulfield Cup
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Japanese seven-year-old stayer Admire Rakti came from well back in the pack after the first half of the race to win the 2,400-meter Caulfield Cup by half a length on Saturday.
Ridden by Zac Purton, Admire Rakti defeated Rising Romance and Lucia Valentina in one of the key lead-up races to the Melbourne Cup.
Winning trainer Tomoyuki Umeda says the horse “had a handicap of 58 kilograms and wasn’t sure about it but he clearly likes Australia. If everything goes well, hopefully his luck keeps going to the Melbourne Cup.”
Purton will ride Admire Rakti again in the 3,200-meter Melbourne Cup, Australia’s richest and most prestigious horse race, on Nov. 4.
