Mr. And Mrs. Makala
Joe and Joan Makala, of West Pittston, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 31, 2018. Joan is the daughter of the late Leopold and Marcella Korecki, of Pittston. Before retiring, Joan started her 35-year banking career at Liberty Bank of Pittston. Later, she joined the First Bank of Greater Pittston, now Wells Fargo through many mergers. Joe is the son of the late Joseph and Helen Makala, of Old Forge. He served for four years in the U.S. Air Force being stationed in France for two years. He retired after 36 years from Schott Glass Technologies of Duryea. Their marriage has been blessed with a son, Jeffrey, PhD., who is university archivist and special collections librarian at Furman University. His wife, Melissa, PhD., is a professor at Clemson University. They reside in Greenville, South Carolina, with their dogs, Murray and Maggie. Jeff and Melissa recently returned from Sydney, Australia, where they both presented papers at the SHARP Conference. Joe and Joan have enjoyed traveling extensively over the years. They have visited 44 of the 50 states, 27 countries, transited the Panama Canal and cruised extensively through the Caribbean.
