October 3, 2018

SWANSEA, Mass. (AP) — A Rhode Island woman police say was drunk and driving the wrong way on a Massachusetts highway when she caused a fiery fatal crash has been indicted.

Prosecutors say 39-year-old Sarah Bergenholtz, of Bristol, Rhode Island, was indicted last week on charges of motor-vehicle homicide, motor-vehicle manslaughter and operating under the influence of alcohol.

Prosecutors say Bergenholtz was driving the wrong way on Interstate 195 in Swansea on May 10 when she struck a Jeep driven by 38-year-old John Souza, of Cranston, Rhode Island.

Souza’s vehicle flipped and caught fire.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Bergenholtz suffered serious injuries in the crash and remains hospitalized. It’s could not immediately be determined if she has a lawyer.

An arraignment date has not been scheduled.
