Melinte Wins Hammer Throw Gold
SEVILLE, Spain (AP) _ Mihaela Melinte of Romania won the first women’s hammer throw gold medal at the World Championships today, beating Russian Olga Kuzenkova. Lisa Misipeka of American Samoa took the bronze.
Melinte, the world record holder, took the lead from her first throw, steadily improving to win with a throw of 246 feet, 9 inches on her last attempt. Kuzenkova was the only other woman to break the 70-meter mark, winning silver with 238 feet, 1 inch on her last attempt.
Melinte had set a world record of 249, 2 1/2 on May 13 in Rome.
Melinte is the 24-year-old daughter of a shot putter.
Because it was the first time the event was held at the championships, the winner won only $30,000, half the customary amount.
