SUV carrying several children crashes, driver tries to run following Cleveland police chase

CLEVELAND, Ohio --- A man fleeing from several Cleveland police officers crashed into a car at Superior Avenue on East 21st Street on Friday then crashed into parked vehicles before the driver was taken into custody.

After crashing, the driver tried to escape through the driver’s side window. Police approached with guns drawn and took him into custody. At least four children were pulled from the SUV.

A cleveland.com reporter heard the crash and captured the aftermath on video.

Cleveland firefighters and EMS were dispatched to the scene. They were seen treating some of the children, but none appeared seriously injured.

A woman in a car stopped at a traffic light when someone fired shots at her car, police said.The woman drove off and was stopped by Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority Police.

While Cleveland police assisted at at East 37th street and Woodland Avenue, the SUV sped off and crashed into another car at East 21st and Superior Avenue, police said.

Five children, ages 10 years old to one month old, and two adults, 19-years-old and 44-years-old, were taken to hospitals. Their current conditions range from stable to critical condition.
