Hammer Toss Kills Track and Field Referee

WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ A Polish track and field referee struck in the head during hammer throw practice for an international students’ meet in Wroclaw died of his injuries on Sunday, the official news agency PAP reported.

Krzysztof Szczesny, 27, was trying to warn a group of women competitors to stop practicing when he was hit by a hammer tossed by a Czech athlete on Saturday, PAP said.

In the hammer throw event, competitors hurl a large iron sphere, which is called a hammer.

The accident occurred before the start of an international track and field meet organized by the Wroclaw Academy of Physical Education, PAP said.

The news agency said that ″despite immediate help and attempts to reanimate him″ Szczesny died at a military hospital in Wroclaw.
