BERLIN (AP) _ Franziska van Almsick of Germany broke the world record in the 200-meter freestyle Saturday, finishing in 1 minute, 56.64 seconds at the European Swimming Championships.

Van Almsick, who won her fourth medal of the meet, broke her own record of 1:56.78, set Sept. 6, 1994, in Rome.

Van Almsick drew huge roars from the crowd as she raced in front from the start and was .59 seconds ahead of the previous record midway through the race.

``It feels so good. Maybe you don't feel the seven years of struggling, but I feel it,'' said the 24-year-old van Almsick.
