Cuban athlete seeks asylum in Spain
MADRID, Spain (AP) _ A member of the Cuban women’s relay track team and her mother reportedly are seeking asylum in Spain.
Odalmis Limonta was scheduled to travel to Athens as part of the Cuban team to the world championships earlier this month but detoured in Madrid and flew to Spain’s Mediterranean island of Mallorca where she joined her husband and coach Pedro Figueroa, the daily ABC reported today.
Limonta was on Cuba’s 4 x 400 relay team which won the gold in the Central American games in June. She also was a member of the Cuban team at the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics.
Limonta told the Spanish national news agency EFE she hopes to resume her track career in Spain.
