September 13, 2018

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece’s statistical authority says the country’s unemployment rate dropped to 19 percent in April-June, compared with 21.2 percent in the first quarter of the year.

The corresponding figure in April-June 2017 was 21.1 percent. The authority said Thursday that the greatest rise in employment was among unskilled and manual laborers.

Part-time employees accounted for 9.4 percent of Greece’s 3.86 million employed workers, and 8.3 percent held temporary jobs.

Unemployment rocketed during Greece’s past eight years of financial crisis, at one point hitting a high of around 28 percent. The government has promised to give top priority to job creation.
