England hints at Ashes chance for Compton
LONDON (AP) — England has dropped a clear hint that Nick Compton is still in its thinking ahead of the Ashes by arranging for the opener to play for Worcestershire in a tour match against Australia next week.
Compton’s hopes of playing in the Ashes appeared to be over after he was omitted from England’s 14-man squad for its only warm-up ahead of the first test, against Essex starting Sunday.
With Compton scoring just 39 runs in four innings in the recent series against New Zealand, selectors had said Joe Root “is currently the best opening partner for Alastair Cook.”
However, Compton scored 81 for county side Somerset in a tour game against Australia on Wednesday and has now been invited to play for Worcestershire in the tourists’ final match before the Ashes.
