ND Centennial Quilt Now Largest In World, Creator Says

July 16, 1988

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ North Dakota’s centennial quilt has sewn up the title as the world’s largest, now that almost 2,000 square feet has been added to the already huge blanket, says the woman who supervised its assembly.

″I actually beat my own record twice,″ Leona Tennyson of Antler said Friday. She began the project two years ago to commemorate North Dakota’s 100th birthday.

It now measures 11,390 square feet, she said.

The Guinness Book of World Records said in March that Ms. Tennyson’s quilt, which measured 9,495 square feet, was the world’s largest.

However, an Australian quilting company, Hobbytex of Bracken Ridge in Queensland, weighed in with a quilt that was about 200 square feet larger, according to Guinness officials.

Ms. Tennyson, 73, promised in May to enlarge the centennial quilt to again make it the world’s largest. She made her vow at a news conference wearing an Army helmet, camouflage jacket and T-shirt that proclaimed ″Beat the Aussies In the Battle of the Quilts.″

The quilt, which was shaped like the state of North Dakota and contained material from all 53 of its counties, was squared off along the eastern border to make it larger, Ms. Tennyson said. North Dakota’s eastern border, formed by the Red River, is its only jagged boundary.

Ms. Tennyson and a team of 16 other quilters recently finished enlarging the quilt, which requires a moving van to haul it around.

″The battle is over,″ said Gov. George Sinner. ″Leona Tennyson is the champ. ...″
