Mount Evans road closes for season; Trail Ridge shut for now
IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The highway to the top of Mount Evans has closed for the season because of wintry weather, and another high-elevation road in Colorado has shut down at least temporarily.
The state Department of Transportation closed Colorado Highway 5 on Mount Evans Friday, citing weather-related safety concerns. The summit is 14,264 feet (4348 meters) above sea level, and the route is billed as the highest paved road in North America.
The road remains open as far as Echo Lake Park, a popular hiking spot at about 10,600 feet (3,231 meters) above sea level.
Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park closed also Friday because of poor conditions, but officials say it could re-open if things improve.
It’s the highest continuous paved road in the United States, reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet (3,713 meters).
