Dolphins’ Underwood Found Bleeding
LANSING, Mich. (AP) _ Dimitrius Underwood of the Miami Dolphins underwent surgery after police found him on the street with a life-threatening cut on his neck.
He was operated on at Sparrow Hospital and listed in stable condition today. Hospital officials are talking to his doctors and family and plan a medical update later today.
Police do not know how Underwood was injured, but a crime is not suspected.
``He was cut. We’re still investigating the nature of the injury,″ said Sgt. Linda Doherty-Wright, a Lansing police spokeswoman.
Doherty-Wright said police discovered Underwood lying on a street about two blocks south of the state Capitol in downtown Lansing about 12:45 p.m. Sunday. The site is near a park and a library and about a block west of the city’s main business street.
Police found Underwood while on their way to answer a call in the area.
Lansing police said Underwood had been arrested Saturday night and released on bond, but had no information on the charge. No one at the Ingham County prosecutor’s office could be reached this morning.
WLNS-TV, WSYM-TV and the Detroit Free Press reported that Underwood had been arrested on a charge of failing to pay child support. The player has 17-month-old twins who live with their mother in Lansing.
Underwood was arrested about 7 p.m. Saturday and taken to the Ingham County Jail in Mason. About 10 p.m., an unidentified woman posted his $500 bond. But he declined to leave immediately, the Detroit Free Press reported.
``He stayed up in the jail about an hour after the bond was posted, and we had to kick him out,″ Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wrigglesworth.
Deputy Kay Van Ellis told the newspaper the woman who bailed him out waited 45 minutes, then went home and returned about 11:45 p.m. and left with Underwood. She said Underwood had been deep in conversation with another prisoner.
The Free Press reported Underwood was shirtless when he was found.
The Dolphins were awaiting more details on the defensive end.
``Our hopes foremost are about his health,″ team spokesman Harvey Greene said. ``But until we have additional information, it would be premature for the club to comment on his situation.″
Michigan State coach Nick Saban said: ``Our thoughts and our prayers are with Dimitrius and we hope for a full recovery.″
The Minnesota Vikings made Underwood their top draft pick, and 29th overall, in April even though he had missed his senior season at Michigan State with a sprained ankle.
He signed a five-year, $5.3 million contract Aug. 1 but walked out of training camp the next day. Underwood told coach Dennis Green he had no desire to play football.
Underwood explained his departure by saying he was torn between a desire to pursue the ministry and the need to support his children.
The Vikings released him Aug. 11. He was claimed on waivers by Miami after 23 other teams passed on him.
Underwood sacrificed a $1.75 million signing bonus by leaving the Vikings. He’s getting a base salary of $395,000 in the first season of a five-year contract with Miami.
Underwood dislocated his left shoulder during preseason and was expected to begin working out again this week. The Dolphins did not play Sunday.
