Students get lessons on history with tour of Florence Veterans Park
FLORENCE, S.C. – Students with Virtus Academy’s Gifted and Talented program toured the Florence Veterans Park on Friday afternoon with Col. (R) Barry Wingard, a member of the park’s committee.
The dozen third- through fifth-graders spent time perusing the walls of honor and asked questions as Wingard took them from monument to monument as he explained the significance of each.
“We try to take a couple of field trips each month, and this was a park that a lot of them had not had an opportunity to come to, and I visited, and I always wanted to bring a group here,” said Patricia Hyman, the gifted and talented program teacher. “I think it is the best thing that Florence has to offer as far as parks because of the history.
“They were excited about coming today and learning about what we have in Florence, the community, plus the history of the United States.”
