Truckloads of snow ready for Illinois sculpting competition
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Crews have moved snow into place for an annual snow sculpting competition that begins next week in Rockford and attracts entrants from around Illinois.
Large trucks hauled 40 loads of snow from the Chicago Rockford International Airport to a city park for the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition. It starts Wednesday. Three-member teams will work until Saturday morning on their sculptures using no power tools and only snow, ice and water.
The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/14DtQl1 ) the competition attracts nearly 70,000 visitors annually. Winners represent Illinois in the following year’s U.S. competition in Wisconsin.
The snow sculptures in past years have been massive and elaborate, depicting dragons, trolls, animals and fish. They’ll be on display as long as the weather permits.
