Merlin Duane Campbell, 87, of Vacaville, formerly of Merrill, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.
Services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Vaca Hills Chapel in Vacaville, Calif. He will be laid to rest at the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Merlin Duane Campbell was born to Ernest and Gladys Campbell in Merrill, Iowa. He was the youngest of four children and spent his early years growing up in Merrill before moving to Oakland, Calif., just before high school. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Washington, D.C., where he met and married Doris Edwards on March 2, 1951. They resided in Pleasant Hill, Calif., for 30 years while raising their family.
He retired from the Berkeley Fire Department in 1964 and from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s dispatch office in 1986. Merlin and Doris spent retirement in Leisure Town (Vacaville, Calif.), where he was active in many clubs, including Lawn Bowling, Vacaville Elks Lodge 2638, Men’s Club, R.V. and Travel Clubs.
Merlin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris; brother, Virgil; and sister, Doris. He is survived by his sister, Frances, a resident of Sioux City; his five children, Duane Campbell (Karen), Sharon Masterson (Brian), Laura Fussell (Robert), Daryl Campbell, and Julie Warnock (Greg), all living in California. Also, 10 grandchildren, Jeff, Jenna, Lauren, Aaron, Sean, Matthew, Kelliann, Jamie, Erin and Kendall; seven great-grandchildren, and another expected to arrive in February 2019.
