Giants’ Hernandez Worried About Dad
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ San Francisco Giants pitcher Livan Hernandez hopes to visit his cancer-stricken father in Cuba.
``If I get the chance, I’ll go. But I need 100 percent security,″ Hernandez said Friday night. ``Your concentration on the mound goes ... It’s hard when something like this happens.″
Arnaldo Hernandez also is the father of New York Yankees pitcher Orlando Hernandez. The half brothers defected from Cuba separately to play in the major leagues.
``You don’t want to pry, but he came in and told me in Pittsburgh on Wednesday,″ Giants manager Dusty Baker said. ``His concentration level and spirit wasn’t very high. ... I talked to him quite deeply I’m just glad he came to me.″
Livan Hernandez was the winning pitcher Friday night in the Giants’ 4-2 victory over the Phillies. He allowed two runs and six hits in a season-high eight innings.
