Eastern Washington 27, Boise State 21

BOISE, Idaho (AP) _ Maurice Perigo scored on a 28-yard interception return with 4:52 remaining to give Eastern Washington a 27-21 victory over Boise State in a non-conference game Saturday night.

On the next series, Perigo recovered a fumble by running back Reggie Ethridge at the Boise State 34 to help preserve the victory. Eastern Washington defensive end Steve Mattson also scored, returning an interception 40 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game.

Eastern Washington, a member of the I-AA Big Sky Conference, improved to 1-1, while Boise State, which bolted the Big Sky to join the I-A Big West, dropped to 1-2.

Joe Sewell, who rushed for 126 yards, scored on a 17-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to make it 14-0.

Boise State countered with Tony Hilde’s 47-yard touchdown pass to Andre Horace with 1:24 left in the quarter, but Eastern Washington took a 21-7 lead on Harry Leons’ 10-yard touchdown pass to Antwan Miller.

Boise State, held to 43 yards rushing in the first half, tied it on Hilde’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ikebe and Walter Reed’s 50-yard interception return.
