Report: Coca-Cola Settles Claim

July 7, 1999

LISBON, Portugal (AP) _ The company producing Coca-Cola in Portugal reached an out-of-court settlement Wednesday with a man who alleged he was blinded when one of the soft drink bottles exploded in his face, according to news reports.

Joao Redondo had demanded compensation from Refrige, which produces Coca-Cola in Portugal under license, for injuries he allegedly sustained in 1991 while working in a cafe.

A court in Figueira da Foz, 90 miles north of Lisbon, was to start hearing the case Wednesday but the two sides told the judge they had reached an agreement, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.

Neither side would give details of the settlement.

Redondo had demanded $324,000 from Refrige but the company refused, and he had rejected their earlier counteroffer of $16,000, Lusa reported.

Redondo alleged the bottle exploded as he put down a crate of Coca-Cola bottles on a counter of the cafe where he was working during his summer vacation, according to Lusa.

He said he suffered injuries to his face and chest and lost his eyesight. He was 14 at the time.
