OPD warns public about skimming devices

August 28, 2018

A skimmer, or credit card and debit card reading device, was found on an ATM at the Stripes located at 8001 East Highway 191 on Sunday, an OPD news release stated.

Police are still searching for the suspect. If anyone used the ATM at this Stripes location, they are advised to monitor their accounts and notify their financial institution of any unauthorized transactions, the release stated.

An unknown male reportedly placed the card reading device outside of the ATM. Police responded to a call about the skimmer being found at about 5:40 p.m. Sunday. Surveillance footage was not immediately available, the release stated.

OPD provided the following skimmer tips:

>> A skimming device reads and stores information from the credit card or debit card magnetic strips when a customer enters their card into an ATM.

>> The device is able to retrieve customer’s debit or credit card information, the name of the card holder and the PIN number associated with the card.

>> A skimmer fits over the original scanner making it appear larger than it should.

>> Individuals should not use a card reader that appears loose or if the security tape on the locked door is broken.

Anyone with information in reference to this investigation is encouraged to contact the Odessa Police Department or Odessa Crime Stoppers and reference case No. 18-35214.
