January 6, 2019

Somerset County Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court Sharon Ackerman announced Saturday her intent to seek the Republican nomination in this year’s municipal election.

Ackerman, 52, of Berkley’s Mill, has served in the office since 2003 and processed 7,451 estates, 848 adoptions, guardianships and trusts, issued 8,157 marriage licenses and collected $49 million in inheritance taxes for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

Ackerman currently serves as secretary of the Registers of Wills and Clerks of Orphans’ Court Association of Pennsylvania and has served on its Legislative Committee and Executive board since 2004. She served as its president from 2012 to 2013.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the residents of Somerset County for the confidence they have placed in me,” she said in a press release. “It is my honor to serve as Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court.”

In Somerset County, the register of wills and clerk of orphans’ court are combined into one office. The register of wills is responsible for administering deceased residents’ estates and processing inheritance taxes.

“We understand that the loss of a loved one is a very difficult and emotional time,” Ackerman said. “Not only are the ones left behind grieving the loss, but also the complex process of settling the estate. We focus on providing a personal touch when offering assistance to families during this sorrowful time.”

The clerk of orphans’ court is responsible for minors’ cases during adoptions and other matters. The clerk is also responsible for marriage license applications.

“As Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court, I am committed to providing timely service in a compassionate manner to the citizens of Somerset County,” Ackerman said.

“Whether applying for a marriage license, probating a will, being appointed a guardian, or adopting a child, you will always receive courteous and efficient service from a staff that is dedicated to meeting your needs. I wish to continue serving you, the residents of Somerset County, and will be grateful for your support in the municipal election.”

Ackerman lives in Berkley’s Mill with her husband, Dan. They are the parents of Air Force Tech. Sgt. Daniel Ackerman, married to Staff Sgt. Holly Ackerman, and Brock Ackerman, a graduate of Meyersdale Area School District and the Somerset County Technology Center. They are also the grandparents of Ben and Hunter Luke.
