CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — A woman who pleaded guilty to setting on fire the hotel bed where a man who beat her slept will avoid prison time.

The Sun News reports 41-year-old Dawn Jordan received a three-year suspended sentence and was ordered to drug court Wednesday. She had pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery after being initially charged with attempted murder in the December 2016 incident.

Prosecutor George Debusk said the victim was a drug dealer with whom Jordan was staying at the hotel. Witnesses said Jordan was beaten after an altercation.

Debusk said Jordan threw a cigarette on the bed, setting it aflame. The victim was treated for burns.

Defense attorney Morgan Martin says Jordan dealt with substance abuse problems.

If she completes the drug court program, her charge will be dismissed.
