Three Killed In Collision With Amtrak Train

March 18, 1987

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) _ A car drove through a railroad crossing and was struck by an Amtrak passenger train Tuesday, killing all three people in the auto, officials said.

″It appears the vehicle did not slow for the crossing,″ said Porter County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ralph Gootee.

The crossing where the accident occurred is marked by a sign, but no flashing lights or gates, he said.

The dead were identified as Marlene Combs, 36, of Michigan City, the driver of the car, and passengers Heather Lynn Frasure and 6-month-old Lisa Ann Frasure.

The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. just outside the Michigan City limits. The eastbound train, which originated in Chicago, was traveling at 74 miles per hour, Gootee said.

None of the train’s 44 passengers was injured, he said.
