Coppin St. 83, Del. St. 57
BALTIMORE (AP) _ Tariq Saunders and five other Coppin State players scored in double-figures as Coppin posted an 83-57 victory over Delaware State in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament Thursday.
Saunders scored 17 points, and Michael Thomas came off the bench to score 14 for Coppin, which improved its record to 19-8.
Coppin, regular season champ each of the past three seasons, was upset in the quarterfinals last year by crosstown rival Morgan State.
The Eagles set out quickly to avoid a similar fate this year, jumping to an 18-6 lead with 13:30 left in the first half.
Delaware State managed to cut the gap to 27-20 with 7:10 left in the first half, but turned the ball over on each of its next seven possessions. Coppin increased its lead to 32-22 at halftime.
Delaware State (7-21) got no closer than seven after the break, and Coppin maintained a double digit lead for the final 12:57 of the game.
Stephan Stewart scored 13 for the Eagles, seven of which came at the start of a 12-2 run that put Coppin in front 57-39 with 10:33 left.
Keith Carmichael added 11 for Coppin. Allan Watson and Sidney Goodman each added 10.
Anderson Herbert led Delaware State with 12 points.
