River Hawks Settle for Tie
NORTH ANDOVER -- The UMass Lowell hockey team allowed a late goal in regulation and settled for a 3-3 tie with host Merrimack College during Hockey East action Saturday night.
UML (18-10-3, 12-6-3) earned a point, but Northeastern, which defeated UNH, pulled into a second-place tie with the River Hawks in the HE standings.
The River Hawks were on the verge of sweeping Merrimack (7-22-3, 4-16-2), but Chase Gresock scored his second goal of the game with 47.1 seconds left and MC’s goaltender pulled for a sixth skater.
In overtime, UML killed off a too many men on the ice penalty. Look in the penalty, UML’s Kenny Hausinger had a breakaway bid, but he was stopped as he was hauled down.
Charlie Levesque broke a 2-2 tie with 7:23 left in the third to put UML ahead. Mattias Goransson and Reid Stefanson assisted.
Merrimack led 1-0 after one period on an Alex Carle goal. Hausinger netted his 10th of the season early in the second and then freshman defenseman Chase Blackmun scored his fourth later in the period to give UML a 2-1 edge.
Gresock’s first goal of the game tied it at 2-2 late in the second.
