Heat, Humidity Hangs Over East, Cool in Pacific Northwest

Undated (AP) _ The East drooped with heat and humidity today as temperatures again threatened to break record highs from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast. It was cooler in the Pacific Northwest and cloudy in the middle.

Temperatures were expected to be in the 90s today from Florida to Maine and across the Mississippi. Thunderstorms were possible throughout the area later in the day.

Wednesday’s temperature records for the date included 96 degrees in New York City’s Central Park; 100 at Philadelphia International Airport; 96 in Pittsburgh; 96 in Toledo, Ohio; 92 in Green Bay, Wis.; and 101 degrees at Washington National Airport.

In the Northwest, it was expected to be breezy and cool with scattered showers. Snow was possible in the higher terrain in the northern Rockies.

Scattered rain and a few thunderstorms were forecast from the northern Plains to the western Great Lakes. A few severe storms with heavy downpours were also possible.

Gusty winds were likely in the Desert Southwest today as a stalled cold front lingered to the north. Dry, mild weather was expected in northern California, and hot and dry weather was anticipated in the Southwest.

The nation’s warmest spot Wednesday was 108 degrees in Death Valley, Calif.

High temperatures today were forecast in the 60s in the Pacific Northwest and Upper Plains, the 80s in the Midwest, and the 90s in much of the eastern half of the nation, the Southwest and the southern tier.
