November 23, 2013

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Academy of Language has published its first dictionary of words commonly used in the Caribbean country.

The dictionary has more than 10,900 entries, including words and phrases culled from books published by more than 100 writers from the Dominican Republic.

Among the words is “palo,” which usually means a wooden stick or branch. The dictionary, however, offers 56 different expressions that incorporate that word and its various meanings.

The dictionary was released late Friday.
