Boxer Loses Protective Gear During Bout
ATLANTA (AP) _ Alfred Tetteh surely scored an Olympic first Sunday night.
The Ghana light flyweight was enjoying a good start in his bout with Morocco’s Hamid Berhili when, midway through the first round, his protective cup fell out of his boxing trunks onto the canvas.
Tetteh went sheepishly to his corner as the referee stopped the bout, picked up the cup and brought it over.
Amid chuckles from the crowd at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum, Tetteh’s cornerman slipped the cup back on. Tetteh was a good sport about it, waving to the crowd before the fight resumed.
Tetteh, who was up 2-1 at the time, wound up losing 10-5.
