Timarida Horse to Beat in The Matriarch
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ If opposing trainers are to be believed, Timarida is clearly the horse to beat in Sunday’s $700,000 Matriarch at Hollywood Park.
``She’s awesome,″ said Marty Jones, who trains Auriette. ``The way she runs is just amazing. If both (Auriette and Timarida) run their races, I don’t see how we can beat her. But maybe if she makes any mistakes, I think we can get her.″
Timarida, a 4-year-old Irish-bred daughter of Kalaglow, has 10 wins, two seconds and two thirds in 15 lifetime starts _ all on turf _ and has earned $1,077,309. She has won both of her races in the United States.
Timarida, who will be ridden by John Murtagh, most recently finished third in the Champion Stakes in England.
``We’re going to have to be awfully lucky to beat her,″ said Bobby Frankel, who trains Wandesta, the third-place finisher in the last two runnings of The Matriarch. ``If she runs her best race, I don’t think we can beat her.″
Auriette will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux while Wandesta will be ridden by Corey Nakatani.
Others entered in the 16th running of the 1 1/4-mile race for fillies and mares on the turf are defending champion Duda, who will be ridden by Gary Stevens; Windsharp, Eddie Delahoussaye; Real Connection, Laffit Pincay; Hollywood Dream, Cash Asmussen; Memories of Silver, Robbie Davis; Bail Out Becky, Pat Day; Alpride, Chris McCarron; Olimpia Dukakis, Alex Solis, and Dixie Pearl, Rene Douglas.
Each entry will carry 123 pounds except Memories of Silver, a 3-year-old filly who will carry 120 pounds.
``This is the best group of (fillies and) mares in America,″ said Wally Dollase, who trains Windsharp. ``Whoever wins The Matriarch deserves the Eclipse (Award).″
Of Timarida, Dollase said, ``The Irish filly is obviously very special. She may be better than my mare.″
Windsharp, a 5-year-old mare who finished fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, has eight wins, five seconds and three thirds in 23 starts and earnings of $741,043.
Before her third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, Memories of Silver had won four straight races. Overall, she has won four of her eight lifetime starts and earned $404,095.
Duda won The Matriarch last year as a 30-1 longshot in 2:00 1-5. She beat Angel In My Heart by 1 length, with Wandesta finishing third, Windsharp fourth, Alpride seventh and Bail Out Becky ninth.
The $500,000 Crown Royal Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds also will be contested Sunday. Rainbow Blues heads a field of 14 entered in the 56th running of the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds on the turf.
Rainbow Blues, who will be ridden by Nakatani, has won three of his 14 lifetime starts and earned $326,950.
