AHL: Providence Overpowers Penguins

November 12, 2018

Finishing off their second straight three-in-three weekend, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tried to rally in the third period of Sunday’s game.

But four early goals by the Providence Bruins were way too much to overcome.

Ryan Donato scored twice for Providence, and the Penguins penalty kill continued to struggle in a 5-2 loss at Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Like on Friday, the Bruins scored twice on the man-advantage.

Derek Grant and Anthony Angello scored for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (7-5-1-1).

The turning point

Providence (5-7-2-0) blitzed the Penguins from the outset, outshooting them 18-3 in the first period. A third minor penalty in the frame — a delay of game by Grant for clearing the puck over the boards — proved costly.

Donato quickly wrapped around the net of Tristan Jarry and put the puck just inside his pad and the post to put Providence ahead.

All that time on the penalty kill prevented Wilkes-Barre/Scranton from getting into any sort of a rhythm, and they played catch-up from there.

Three stars

■ Donato finished up a three-goal weekend and took third-star honors.

■ Zach Senyshyn had a backbreaking goal early in the second when he took advantage of a bad Penguins line change and dashed free for a successful breakaway. He also had an assist and was star No. 2.

■ Colby Cave continued his breakout season with two assists for the Bruins, giving him 15 points and first-star billing.

Stat to know

The Penguins have now allowed at least one power-play goal in six straight games.

The takeaway

Much like last Sunday in Bridgeport, it’s a game the Penguins will want to forget.

When they did show pressure in the third, they were able to force goaltender Zane McIntyre into a puckhandling mistake and beat him twice. However, they were a step behind for much of the game and couldn’t overcome another early parade to the penalty box.

Up next

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton meets Springfield for a 10:35 a.m. puck drop on Wednesday at MassMutual Center to complete its five-game road stretch.
