Villa beats Southampton 3-2 in Premier League
SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — Fabian Delph scored the winning goal in the 80th minute to give Aston Villa a 3-2 win at Southampton, after the hosts had twice come from behind to level in an entertaining Premier League match.
Southampton dominated for much of the game, but Gabriel Agbonlahor and Libor Kozak had previously given Villa the lead, only for Jay Rodriguez and Pablo Osvaldo to head in equalizers for the hosts.
But Delph unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike on a counterattack to finally settle the contest and end Southampton’s unbeaten home record in the Premier League.
With the loss, Southampton is now five points outside the Champions League spots after surprisingly spending much of the first third of the season inside the top four. Having lost at Arsenal and Chelsea, Southampton fell to three straight defeats for the first time since manager Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival in January.
All three of Villa’s goals came against the run of play, as Saints were made to pay for their failure to turn their domination into goals.
“It is a difficult result to take because the team put in a great effort and did very well,” Pochettino said. “It’s the type of game you lose maybe once in 1,000, but tonight we lost it.”
Aston Villa climbed to 10th.
“I thought we deserved to win the game. There have been times when we have had loads of the ball and got nothing. All you get is a pat on the back,” Villa manager Paul Lambert said. “We needed three points and I thought we were lethal in front of goal.”
