Debell, Weber lead Marshall volleyball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — All-tournament selections Ciara Debell and Amber Weber lifted the Marshall University volleyball team in a 3-1 victory Saturday against IUPUI to conclude the Thundering Herd’s appearance in a tournament at Bowling Green.
Marshall, now 7-7 for the (season, defeated IUPUI 25-19, 27-25,25-19,26-24.
Debell posted impressive statistics in a double-double performance of 26 kills and 23 digs. Weber recorded 31 digs.
“Ciara and Amber were pretty special all weekend and certainly deserved the all-tournament team accolade,” Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs said in a release. “Ciara put up some very special numbers that helped us get two big wins. But it was Amber that put in a weekend performance that I’m not sure Fve seen from one of our liberos.”
Shelby Conley and Ivana Trencheva had 13 and 10 kills respectively. Autumn Elswick had 17 digs. Gabrielle Coulter had 52 assists and 12 digs.
IUPUI (3-11) had Elizabeth Scott with 12 kills while Rhianno Schunemann made 36 digs.
After being on the road for six consecutive matches, Marshall is back home to begin Conference USA play at 6 p.m. Friday against the Charlotte 49ers.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Nick Schmidt was the lead runner Saturday for Marshall in the men’s 8K race in the John McNichols Invitational hosted by Indiana State University.
Schmidt placed 23rd with a time of 26:02.2. Madelyn Garrison led the Thundering Herd women in 62nd place with a 5K time of 20:00.7.
The men’s team finished ninth out of 12 schools and the women were 11th out of 12 schools in a meet on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course that has hosted the NCAA championship meet 12 times.
Purdue, Indiana State and Bowling Green took the top three places in the men’s race. Butler, Purdue and Northern Illinois were the top three women’s teams.
RICHMOND, Ky. — Kyle Mitchell from Marshall is tied for 13th place after carding scores of 70 and 72 in Saturday’s first two rounds of the Eastern Kentucky Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament at the par-70 University Club at Arlington.
Ty Celone of Eastern Michigan (68-69—137) and Billy Basham from Eastern Kentucky (68-69—137) share the lead at 3-under-par entering Sunday’s final round.
Eastern Michigan leads the team standings at 557 followed by the host Colonels (563), Morehead State (571), Cleveland State (574) and Murray State (574). Marshall shot 582 and is eighth out of 15 teams.
Other golfers for Marshall are Matt Hoffman (70-73—143), Thomas Frazier (72-74—146), Ben Roeder (77-74—151) and Isaac Prine (77-80—157).
