NEW YORK (AP) _ Angelina Jolie wishes she had a little less in common with the self-destructive supermodel she plays in the upcoming HBO film ``Gia.''

Starting in the late 1970s, Gia Carangi quickly became a top model. By 1980, she was also a heroin addict who had gained a reputation for extremely erratic behavior at fashion shoots. She was soon blackballed from the modeling scene and in 1986 she died of AIDS.

Jolie, 22, the daughter of actor Jon Voight, was leery about taking the role at first.

``Gia has enough similarities to me that I figured this would either be a purge of all my demons, or it was gonna really mess with me,'' Jolie says in the Jan. 16 Entertainment Weekly. ``I hate heroin because I have been fascinated with it. I'm not immune, but I won't do it now, at all, because luckily I've found something that replaces that high, which is my work.''

Still, some similarities between the two suit Jolie just fine.

``I like to have everything as deep and crazy and full of raw energy as she did,'' Jolie said.
