India Tea Estate Manager Kills 5
GAUHATI, India (AP) _ A tea estate manager allegedly shot at workers who mobbed him Saturday to demand better wages, killing five people and seriously wounding 20 others.
The company official in the thickly forested Assam state, India’s tea hub, was joined by his security guards as they opened fire at nearly 200 slogan-shouting laborers inside the Borgora tea estate in the northern Darrang area, a district official said on customary condition of anonymity.
The workers demanded their daily wages be raised to 90 cents from the current 70 cents.
The official said four workers died immediately and one more in hospital. Police have arrested the garden manager and his security guards.
Borgora is among the three gardens in Assam which produce green tea.
