Congressional hopeful Clark to kick off campaign
BOSTON (AP) — State Sen. Katherine Clark is planning to officially kick off her campaign for U.S. Sen. Edward Markey’s old 5th Congressional District seat with a rally in her hometown of Melrose.
Clark is getting a boost from Attorney General Martha Coakley and Melrose Mayor Robert Dolan who are scheduled to participate in the Saturday morning event at Memorial Hall.
Clark is one of five Democrats hoping to fill the U.S. House seat left vacant by Markey’s election last month to John Kerry’s old Senate seat.
Markey was sworn-in Tuesday.
Other Democratic candidates eyeing Markey’s seat include Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, Medford state Rep. Carl Sciortino, Belmont state Sen. William Brownsberger and Ashland state Sen. Karen Spilka.
Republican attorney Frank Addivinola also is running.
The primary elections will be Oct. 15. The general election is Dec. 10.
