high school roundup Newtown girls rout Weston

December 21, 2018

WESTON — The Newtown girls basketball team brought a stifling defense from the opening tip, and didn’t let up in a 62-31 win over SWC rival Weston on Thursday night.

Nikki DaPra scored 20 points for the Nighthawks, who have jumped out to a 4-1 start despite playing a difficult schedule — Newtown edged East Lyme on Tuesday, and its only loss came out of state against prep power Saddle River Day (N.J.).

It was an over-aggressive defensive effort at first, coach Jeremy O’Connell said, as fouls gave Trojans points at the line. This wasn’t reflected in the point total, though, as the Nighthawks yielded 16 points through two quarters.

“Our defensive intensity was there the whole game,” O’Connell said. “We committed a lot of silly fouls in the first half; but we made good adjustments at the half, good adjustments with help-side defense.”

Jackie Matthews was the primary Newtown defender who held All-State standout Katie Orefice to seven points on one field goal.

“She just loves that role,” O’Connell said. “That’s her role, to defend the other team’s best player regardless of her position, and she’s done a great job.”

The Nighthawks will now get a week of practice before hosting their holiday tournament Dec. 28-29.

“I’m happy but I’m cautiously optimistic,” O’Connell said. “We’ve played a good schedule to start but we haven’t put a whole game together. We have a great team; the girls are tremendous in their work ethic.”
