PEABODY, Mass. (AP) — A northeast Massachusetts police officer who died in 1977 will now be included on a national monument honoring more than 20,000 officers who died in the line of duty.

The Salem News reports (http://bit.ly/23Gzb7m ) the name of former Peabody Patrolman Edward “Scotty” Johansen will soon be found on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. for his actions on Nov. 13, 1971.

On that day, Johansen provided mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to an individual who went into cardiac arrest after a suspected overdose. The man survived, but it was later learned that he carried the hepatitis disease.

Although he was inoculated, Johansen began showing signs of the disease and eventually succumbed six years later at age 43.

Johansen will also be remembered on memorial to police and firefighters in Peabody.
