American Home Products Unit Buys Polaner Jam and Jelly Maker
NEW YORK (AP) _ American Home Products Corp. said Thursday its food division has bought jam and jelly producer M. Polaner Inc. from Dutch-based Artal NV and Leonard Polaner.
The price of the acquisition was not disclosed.
″Polaner already has a reputation for making the finest quality jams and jellies, and it is America’s fastest growing major jam company,″ said American Home Food Products President Charles LaRosa. ″Our purchase of Polaner’s long line of high-quality products gives us a significant position in a growing market segment.″
The Roseland, N.J. company has been in business since 1896 when Max and Lena Polaner began preserving fresh fruits and pickling vegetables. Polaner now produces about 600 products including jams, jellies, preserves, marmalades, fruit butters and conserves.
Its best known product is Polaner All Fruit, a spreadable fruit sweetened with fruit juice concentrate.
In addition to its jams and jellies, Polaner makes ready-to-use garlic products, which are included in the American Home Products acquisition. The acquisition does not include the B&G pickle and pepper product line, which had been affiliated with Polaner since 1986.
The Polaner products will expand American Home’s already extensive food lineup. Among some of American Home’s leading food brands are Chef Boyardee foods, PAM cooking spray, Gulden’s mustards and Jiffy Pop popcorn.
American Home Products manufactures and markets prescription drugs, medical supplies and diagnostic equipment as well as foods.
