Sept. 14, 1993: RIO CHAMA — A 9-year-old girl was shot to death and her mother seriously wounded Monday afternoon after they surprised a burglar in their home.
An Española priest said Annette Valerio and her daughter, Vanessa, had just returned from praying at Sacred Heart Church and were saying the rosary in their car just a few minutes before they were shot.
Vanessa Valerio died shortly after 3 p.m. at Española Hospital from a single gunshot to the shoulder.
Her mother, Annette Valerio, was stabilized in Española and then transferred to St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe. She was listed in satisfactory condition Monday night.
