Alabama takes women’s team crown
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) _ Alabama won the USGA Women’s Team Championship as Virginia Derby Grimes shot a 2-under 70 and teammate Kathy Hartwiger came through with an eagle to finish with a 73 at Kierland Golf Club.
``″I am shaking,″ said Hartwiger, of Birmingham, whose 60-yard wedge shot gave her a 3 on the par-5 468-yard first hole in the closing round Thrusday. ``This is awesome. I just want to scream.″
Beth Williams of Birmingham shot a 77 the final day to give Alabama 429 for the three-day tournament, thanks in part to her 71 on Wednesday.
``This means to much,″ said Grimes, twice a medalist at the U.S. Women’s Amateur only to be eliminated in match play.
North Carolina’s Brenda Currie Kuehn of Fletcher fired a tournament-low 67 to give her team second place, one stroke ahead of Florida’s 438.
Kuehn and Marla Jemsek of Ovieda, Fla., shared low individual scoring honors at 2-under 213, followed by Hartwiger’s 214.
Betsy Bro of Scottsdale carded an ace on the 137-yard fourth hole to finish 1-under, and Jenny Burrill of Farmington, Conn., aced the 145-yard 14th _ her first hole-in-one and her first national championship competition.
Virginia finished fourth at 440 and Pennsylvania was fifth at 441.
