Alleged Murderer Added To FBI ‘Ten Most Wanted’ List

WASHINGTON (AP) _ A Detroit man charged with the murder of a South Carolina woman has joined the FBI’s ″Ten Most Wanted″ list.

The FBI identified the fugitive Wednesday as Joseph Martin Luther Gardner, who was born in Detroit and was last seen there.

Gardner, 24, is charged by state authorities with murdering Melissa Ann McLauchlin, 25, in Dorchester County, S.C., on Dec. 30, 1992. He is charged in a federal warrant with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Gardner is, black, 5-feet-8, weighs 145 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. He was on leave from the Navy when the killing occurred and may have since traveled to Canada.

The FBI said Gardner is believed armed with .25-caliber and .357-caliber handguns and should be considered dangerous. Those with information should call the nearest FBI office.

He is the 437th person placed on the list, which began in 1950. Of those, 408 have been arrested or located - 128 as a result of citizen assistance.
