Doug Gilmour will not return to Toronto’s lineup until the second round of the playoffs, if at all. An MRI indicated that significant healing of the damaged medial collateral ligament in his left knee is still needed. The anterior cruciate ligament was also damaged.

THE GAP

Ottawa finished 30 points ahead of its first-round opponent, the New York Islanders. This is the largest point differential between playoff opponents since first-place Pittsburgh and eighth-place New Jersey were 32 points apart in 1993.

EXPERIENCE

Patrick Roy has played an NHL-record 240 career playoff games. Minnesota’s goalie tandem of Dwayne Roloson and Manny Fernandez has combined for six postseason starts.

FAMILIAR FOES

Edmonton and Dallas are meeting in the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years. The Stars have won the last four postseason meetings and went 3-1 against the Oilers this season.

BENCH BOSSES

Claude Julien and Geoff Ward of Hamilton shared the American Hockey League’s coach of the year award. Julien started the season with the Bulldogs, posting a record of 33-6-3-3 before he was promoted to head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. Ward took over, guiding the Bulldogs to a 49-19-8-4 finish and its first division championship.
