Germany Beats U.S. in Field Hockey

March 28, 1998

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Germany beat the United States 4-0 in a spiteful women’s field hockey match at a four-nation tournament Saturday.

Heike Latzse scored an early goal from a penalty corner and Cornelia Reiter added a second before halftime.

Ten minutes into the second half German captain Katrin Kauschke was struck in the head and pushing and shoving ensued.

Kauschke and U.S. skipper Tracey Fuchs also faced off as tempers flared.

Germany then wrapped up the match with further goals to Britta Becker and Nadine Ernsting-Krienke.

In a later match, hosts Australia had a 1-1 tie with Argentina.

Louise Dobson put the home side ahead in the 23rd minute while Argentina equalized through Vanina Oneto.
