ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) _ Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino sprained his left ankle late in the first half Sunday against the Buffalo Bills and left the game again in the third quarter after playing one series of downs.
Marino threw an incomplete pass on a second-down play with 31 seconds left in the half, then walked off the field and signaled for backup Craig Erickson. Marino went into the Dolphins’ dressing room.
Marino tried to play one series in the second half before leaving with 11:25 left in the third quarter and the Bills leading 6-3.
The NFL’s leader career passer, Marino started the game with seven straight incompletions. He was 4-of-13 for 67 yards in the first half.
Erickson threw one incompletion in the first half before the Dolphins cut the lead to 6-3 on Olindo Mare’s 27-yard field goal.
