Police Say Mother Didn’t Report Daughters’ Rape by Stepfather
MIAMI (AP) _ A woman who took no action when her three daughters, including a 9-year- old, told her they had been raped by their stepfather was jailed on charges of child abuse, police said.
Veronica Hind, 38, was arrested Wednesday ″for not coming forward″ to report the alleged attacks on the youngest girl and her sisters, ages 18 and 20, over a six-year period, said police Detective Charles Wellons.
The attacks occurred when Mrs. Hinds was at work at night, police said.
Mrs. Hind’s husband, Lascelles Alexander Crawford, 44, also arrested Wednesday, remained jailed without bond on three counts of sexual battery - one a capital offense because of the youngest girl’s age.
Mrs. Hind also remained jailed today.
Police learned of the alleged attacks from the 18-year-old daughter, who had learned that her younger sister may have been raped, Wellons said. ″She’s been carrying this weight around for a long time. It’s like a cancer.″
Florida’s child abuse statute grants police the power ″to charge someone who leaves a child in a situation where they know the child could be harmed,″ said Assistant State Attorney Teresa Pooler.
Authorities say Mrs. Hind knew of the assaults.
